a1. Göz Kliniği, Ankara Atatürk Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, ANKARA Recently, the types of refractive surgeries performed for either medical or cosmetic reasons have increased in parallel with technological developments, and the fields of application of refractive surgery have broadened. The purpose of refractive surgeries is refractive correction, improvement of both visual acuity and visual quality, and the maintenance of these across time. As advances in technology make this surgery easier and safer, perhaps the most difficult aspect of the procedure is that the eye should be healthy to run the procedure. Along with many ocular conditions, various systemic diseases may be negatively affected by refractive surgery. To achieve surgical success, the selection of appropriate patients, the correct choice of surgical technique and the patients’ expectations being realistic are important. In the selection of patients, in addition to systemic and ocular history, family history and refraction stability period, the patient’s occupational and social environment should be evaluated in detail. If these aspects are not well evaluated, then even a successful procedure will not provide the desired results, and visual acuity in addition to other visual parameters may worsen to an advanced degree. Keywords: Keratectomy, photorefractive, excimer laser; keratomileusis, laser in situ; keratectomy, subepithelial, laser-assistedTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2007, 27:547-559
