Dr. Mehmet TÜKENMEZa
aOrtopedi ve Travmatoloji Kliniği, Karaman Devlet Hastanesi, KARAMAN Objective: We treated 24 hips of 21 patients with primary total hip arthroplasty between January 1993 and June 1997 at the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Faculty of Medicine, Cumhuriyet University. The aim of this study was to determine the outcomes in patients treated with primary total hip arthroplasty with expansion acetabular component.
Material and Methods: Thirteen patients were females and 8 were males. The median age was 50.92 years. All patients were evaluated according to Harris hip score before the operation and at the last visit. Radiographic analyses were based on De Lee and Charnley criteria for the acetabular component and Gruen criteria for the femoral component.
Results: Median Harris hip score was 34.29 before the operation (ranged between 18-44). Postoperative median acetabular angle was 46.25. The average follow-up period was 63.37 months. Average Harris hip score was 90.04 (78-96) at the last control visit. The results were excellent in 19 patients, good in 3 and fair in 2.
Conclusion: We found that the outcomes in patients treated with primary total hip arthroplasty with expansion acetabular component, were good. We suggested that hip arthroplasty with expansion acetabular component, which has been losing popularity during the recent years, should be considered as an effective alternative method. Keywords: Arthroplasty, replacement, hip; outcome assessmentTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2007, 27:528-532
