Material and Methods: Patients aged 20 years or older with a colostomy period of at least 4 months and attending to the İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty General Surgery Department between November 2004 and October 2005 were included in the study. Forty-five patients with colostomy accepting to participate in the research and open to communication were enrolled after informed consent was obtained. Three forms were used as data collection tools; information form, Coopersmith self-esteem scale and body image scale.
Results: Of the patients included in the research, the mean age was 53 ± 11; 57% of the cases were males, 71% were married, 64% were primary school graduates, 35% were retired, 93% had children, and 93% had social security. In 79.9% of the subjects, colostomy was opened due to cancer, 71% had a colostomy period of 4-12 months. The results revealed that 89% of the patients had received training about colostomy prior to and after surgical intervention and 71% did their colostomy treatment themselves. Analysis of the correlation between socio-demographic characteristics and the self-esteem and body image scores revealed that while the difference between self-esteem scores with regard to educational status was statistically significant (p< 0.05), no significant difference (p> 0.05) was detected between the mean body image scores. The mean self-esteem scores were high in patients with high educational levels.
Conclusion: Colostomy degrades the body image of the individual and decreases self-esteem. To reduce problems of individuals with colostomy, training should be provided prior to and after stoma. The training should be continuous and the individual should be supported physiologically, psychologically and socially. Keywords: Nursing; colostomy; body imageTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2007, 27:522-527
