Objective: We aimed to investigate obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) symptoms in patients who presented to the neurology outpatient clinic and to evaluate the risk factors for OSAS.
Material and Methods: In this prospective study, 505 patients over 18 years old who attended to the Afyon Kocatepe University School of Medicine, Neurology outpatient clinic for the first time between January 2004 and July 2004 were questioned for OSAS symptoms. Polysomnography was not performed in patients with a clinical suspicion of OSAS. The reason of attendance to the outpatient clinic, medical background and body mass index (BMI) were recorded.
Results: Of the 505 patients 127 (25.1%) (mean age = 49.5 ± 13.6) had a suspicion for OSAS clinically. Mean ages and BMI of patients with OSAS were significantly higher than those without (p= 0.013 ve p< 0.001). OSAS was more common among patients who presented with headache accompanying dizziness. Obesity, hypertension and diabetes were more common among OSAS patients (p= 0.001, p= 0.021, p= 0.043, respectively). The most common complaints of OSAS patients were snoring (81%) and fatigue throughout the day (83.5%).
Conclusions: Clinically suspected OSAS is quite common among patients who attend to neurology outpatient clinics. OSAS is closely associated with neurology and neurological diseases with regard to both its symptoms and its outcomes.
