aPsikiyatri AD, Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Population is getting older in our world and number of elderly The population is getting older in our world and the number of elderly inhabitants in developing countries is rapidly increasing. In Turkey, the ratio of the population older than 65 to the overall population is 6% and the estimated number of Alzheimer patients is 200.000. The concept of burnout in caregivers of Alzheimer patients has become the center of interest in the recent years. Several variables may increase the caregivers’ distress. Variables associated with patients such as the level of disease, lack of communication, personality changes and behavioral and psychological signs and symptoms as well as variables associated with caregivers like gender, fear of being unsuccessful, ideals, deterioration in physical and psychological health and relationship between the patient and the caregiver influences the level of distress of the caregiver. While the steps to burnout are discussed, alternatives should be used prophylactically to prevent burnout instead of after burout occurs. Clinicians should have extensive knowledge on pharmachological and unpharmachological treatment modalities and to should inform caregivers on such alternatives. Keywords: Alzheimer disease; caregivers; burnout, professionalTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2007, 27:445-454
