Evidenced Based Nursing In The Management Of Oral Mucositis: Review

Evidenced based practice shows how to provide the best patient care. Creating an evidenced based practice is a lifelong process that requires continuing research and education. For the nursing profession to improve the use of evidence based practice, it is necessary to enhance the knowledge and skills in this area and to reduce the barriers implementing nursing care based on scientific evidence.
Oral mucositis is one of the important issues for evidenced based practice that developes during cancer treatment. Many pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic approaches have been used for the prevention and treatment of oral mucositis, but there is not one universally accepted approach for its management. Most preventive and treatment strategies are based on limited clinical data. Newer approaches are needed to improve prophylaxis and therapy in patients receiving chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy.Keywords: Chemotherapy; nursing care; stomatitisTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2007, 27:398-406
