Objective: We compared uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) and radiofrequency tissue volume reduction (RFTVR) techniques commonly used for the surgical treatment of snoring, with regard to complaints and satisfaction of patients.
Material and Methods: Sixty-nine patients underwent velopharyngeal surgery for primary snoring (30 for UPPP; and 39 for RFTVR). Data concerning complaints and satisfaction were retrospectively recorded in a database. Epworth Sleeping Scale (ESS) was used for the final status of snoring in patients postoperatively.
Results: Postoperative complaints (pharyngeal dryness, globus sensation, voice change, trouble with smell and taste, phlegm, air leakage, swallowing disturbance and pharyngonasal reflux) were more present in the UPPP group than in the RFTVR group (p< 0.05). The most frequent complaint was a tendency to pharyngeal dryness (63.32%) for UPPP and to globus sensation (59.73%) for RFTVR postoperatively. The mean ESS score was 1.53 for UPPP group and 1.33 for RFTVR group and continued snoring after surgery was closely correlated to dissatisfaction in both groups (p< 0.05). Postoperative late complications were more frequent in the UPPP than in the RFTVR group (p< 0.05).
Conclusion: Postoperative results and patient satisfaction after UPPP and RFTVR appears to be very similar for the treatment of primary snoring. The severity and number of complaints were found to be acceptable for the management of snoring. It is very important to carry out follow-up after UPPP and RFTVR because complaints and dissatisfaction are common. Every effort should be made to reduce the complaints and dissatisfaction of patients.
