aİç Hastalıkları AD, bKlinik İmmünoloji ve Romatoloji BD, Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Autoimmunity develops due to dysregulation of one or some of the immune tolerance mechanisms. Independent of the mechanism of the autoimmune disease, there are circulating autoantibodies in all of these disorders. A diagnosis of autoimmune disease in patients is based upon clinical history, physical examination, and laboratory detection of autoantibodies. The detection of these autoantibodies and identification of their specificity have become well-established tools for the laboratory diagnosis of several autoimmune diseases. The indications for use are to establish a diagnosis of autoimmune disease in patients with suggestive clinical symptoms, to exclude a diagnosis of autoimmune disease in patients with few or uncertain clinical signs, to subclassify patients with a known diagnosis, and to monitor disease activity. The most frequently used autoantibodies are ANA (antinuclear antibodies), anti-dsDNA (anti-double stranded DNA), anti-ENA (extractable nuclear antigen), anti-SM (smooth muscle), anti-RNP (ribonucleoprotein), anti-Ro, anti-La, anti-Ribosomal P, anti-Mi, anti-CCP, aPL antibody (anti phospholipid antibody) and ANCA (antineutrophilic cytoplasmic antibody). Keywords: Connective tissue diseases; autoantibodies; autoimmunityTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2007, 27:236-246
