aPediatrik Hematoloji BD, bPediatrik Gastroenteroloji Hepatoloji ve Beslenme Ünitesi, Başkent Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Hemorrhage during liver transplantation is mainly caused by two factors. The first one is liver disease such as quantitative and qualitative platelet disorders, decreased production of coagulation factors and inhibitors, vitamin-K deficiency, synthesis of abnormal coagulation factors, decreased clearance of activated coagulation factors, hyperfibrinolysis and disseminated intravascular coagulation. The second factor is surgical intervention causing hyperfibrinolysis as well as specific and non-specific coagulation defects. There is no consensus whether preoperative correction of coagulation defects improves intraoperative hemorrhage. Therefore, rapid and sensitive monitoring of coagulation in addition to rational use of blood, blood products and pharmacologic agents may be beneficial during surgery. Keywords: Liver transplantation; blood coagulationTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2007, 27:91-98
