Role Of The Nurse In Patients With Stoma: Review

Creation of a stoma is an intervention which can lead alterations in life-style and affect quality of life. Intestinal and colon cancers are the most common reasons to apply stoma. Stoma is applied to have a longer survive and improve quality of life. Patients with a stoma may face with many problems mostly physiological, psychological and social. Relations with family members and social life is affected in a negative way and patients tend to isolate themselves from the society. The patient must cope with loss of an important function of body, loss of body image, alterations in physical funtions and personal care in addition to a major surgery recovery. Physical change after application of stoma can affect sexual life as well. Although physical problems which patients face with decreases in time by the help of appropriate care, training and consultancy; social and psychological problems last. Nurses have very important role within wholistic approach for determining major problem areas, giving support for the conservation of the patients’ self-esteem and generating good relations with the healthcare team. Maintaning the best possible health status, meeting the requirements about treatment, care and daily activities, minimizing and preventing the problems can be managed by nursing interventions.Keywords: Stomas; adaptation; nursingTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2007, 27:86-90
