Many materials, natural or artificial, were tested to find the most suitable mesh material. Polypropylene is the most common material used in hernia repair. The investigations related to the use and efficacy of silicone material are limited.
Material and Methods: Two groups, each with 15 Wistar rats, participated in the study. An abdominal wall defect was created in all subjects of both groups. Polypropylene mesh was selected as the repairing material for defects in the first group silicone sheet in the second group. The subjects were sacrified on postoperative day 28 and formation of intraperitoneal adhesions, histologic maturation and breaking strength of mesh-fasia incorporation area were investigated.
Results: There was no significant difference with respect to grades, numbers and sizes of adhesions between two groups. There was a significant difference between the polypropylene mesh group (5.7 ± 0.9 kg) and the silicon group (2.2 ± 0.4 kg) with regard to the breaking strength. Similarly, the ‘histological wound maturation degree’ was significantly different in the polypropylene mesh group (3.1 ± 0.8) and the silicon group (1.5 ± 0.5). The complication rate of the polypropylene mesh group was significantly lower than that of the silicone group (26.7% and 66.7% respectively).
Conclusion: In this study, we concluded that the silicone material was not a useful alternative to polypropylene mesh for repairing ventral hernias with less tissue incorporation and less breaking strength and higher morbidity. Keywords: Arachnoid cysts; temporal lobe; psychotic disorders; quetiapineTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2007, 27:59-64
