FMS is a condition with chronic and disseminated muscle pain of longer than three months’ duration with tender points in anatomically defined regions. The etiology and pathogenesis of this syndrome was not clearly defined. The aim of this study is to investigate the frequency of depression, anxiety and alexithymia (the form of self-expression) symptoms in fibromyalgia syndrome patients.
Material and Methods: Fifty-five volunteers with FMS and 55 healthy volunteers were recruited for the study. Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Beck Depression Scale (BDS), Hamilton Depression and Anxiety Scales (HAM-D, HAM-A), Toronto Alexithimic Scale (TAS), State-Trait-Anxiety Inventory-I, II (STAI-I, II), and Symptom Checklist 90 Scales (SCL-D, SCL-A) were used in all patients and control groups at the first visits. The scores of both groups for the above parameters were recorded and were compared with t test for significant differences.
Results: VAS, depression, anxiety and alexithymia scores of fibromyalgia patients were significantly higher than the scores of the control group (p< 0.01).
Conclusion: As a result, anxiety and depression are more frequent in FMS patient than in healthy people. Alexithymia should be considered especially in conditions with unknown etiology such as FMS. We suggest that expression of feelings verbally will contribute to our understanding of neurological connections. Keywords: Fibromyalgia; affective symptoms; depressionTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2007, 27:32-35
