bİç Hastalıkları Hemşireliği AD, Hacettepe Üniversitesi Hemşirelik Yüksekokulu, ANKARA Objective: The aim of this descriptive study was to assess the functional status in individuals with cancer.
Material and Methods: This research was carried out on 120 patients diagnosed with lung, breast and colon-rectum cancer in the Daily Chemotherapy Units of Akdeniz University Hospital between November 15, 2004 and April 15, 2005. Personal information forms developed by the researcher and the “Functional Living Index (Cancer)” scale developed by Harvey Schipper et al were used as the data tools. The validity and reliability of the scale were analyzed previously in cancer patients in the same units by the same researcher and the scale proved valid and reliable in individuals with cancer in Antalya. Data were collected through personal interviews with the patients.
Results: The factors that influenced functional status were (p< 0.05) diagnosis, undergoing surgery, the last date of radiotherapy and the last date of surgery, gender, marital status, education, job, working situation, monthly income, taking care of a person, being taken care of, being trained on medical treatment, and the trainer.
Conclusion: The score of cancer patients on “Functional Living Index (Cancer)” was low (102.22 ± 20.33) and the functional status of breast cancer patients was poor. In conclusion, we recommend to apply the “Functional Living Index (Cancer)” in different groups and to undertake further qualitative research. Keywords: Neoplasms, quality of lifeTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2006, 26:488-499
