aNBC BD Başkanlığı, GATA, ANKARA From the earliest days of microbiological research, laboratory technicians have recognized that acquiring infection from the agents they manipulated was a recognized occupational hazard. Pike (1941-1979) reported 3921 laboratory-acquired infections in his data collection from more than 5000 laboratories. While less than 20% of these were due to a known laboratory accident, most infections were of unknown origin. Exposures to infectious aerosols were implicated in about 80% of the reported cases.
Most risks from biological hazards may be reduced by the use of appropriate microbiological procedures and techniques, containment devices and facilities, and protective barriers. Biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory is suitable for working with infectious agents, which may cause serious or potentially lethal diseases as a result of exposure by inhalation. BSL-3 laboratories should be located away from high-traffic areas. Keywords: Safety, laboratories researchTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2006, 26:396-403
