Antimutagens And Anticarcinogens (cancer Chemoprevention): Medical Education
Dr.Kimy. Neslihan GÜRBÜZa
aGazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Laboratuvar Hayvanları Yetiştirme ve Deneysel Araştırmalar Merkezi, ANKARA Cancer prevention can be defined as prevention of cancer by the administration of one or more chemical entities, either as individual drugs or as naturally occurring constituents of the diet. Many diverse environmental and industrial chemicals are capable of inducing genotoxic effects in exposed organism including humans. To deal with these toxic chemicals, the human body is equipped with self-defense mechanisms such as detoxification processes through various enzymes. However, increased exposure to hazardous chemicals can lead to mutagenic and carcinogenic events. It is possible to determine the genotoxicity of mutagenic and carcinogenic complexes using the DNA containing substances produced in the cell due to exposure to carcinogens and mutagens. The use of antimutagens and anticarcinogens in everyday life are reported to be the most effective procedure for preventing human cancer and genetic disease. Epidemiological research indicates that high fruit and vegetable intake is associated with lower cancer risk. People are exposed to many carcinogenic and mutagenic chemicals in their everyday lives. These include antineoplastic drugs, polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), aromatic amines, nitrosamines, metals and radiation. Although the human body has developed a variety of defense mechanisms for its protection against such chemicals, increasing exposure to hazardous chemicals can lead to mutagenic and carcinogenic events in our cells. Thus, there is a need to identify and use agents, which can suppress the mutagenic and/or carcinogenic ability of environmental chemicals. Keywords: Antimutagenic agents, anticarcinogenic agents, DNA damage, chemopreventionTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2006, 26:312-318
