Material and Methods: Forty-nine Wistar male rats were enrolled in the study. In group 1 (n= 20), approximately 1 x 1 x 0.5 cm beeswax tablets and in group 2 (n= 20), 1 x 1 x 0.5 cm silicone blocks were used as implantation material. All implants were placed on the toracodorsal region and each rat had only one implant. In Group-3, which was the negative control group, only toracodorsal dissection was performed in nine rats. Biopsies were obtained at 3, 6 and 9 months and tissue sections were analyzed for the following parameters: capsule formation, capsule thickness, granulation and collagen tissue formation.
Results: At 3 months, there was no significant difference between beeswax and silicone implants. At 9 months of the follow-up, purified beeswax seemed to cause less tissue reactions (p< 0.05) than the silicone implant. Group 3 with toracodorsal dissection alone had normal wound healing processes with minimal fibrosis.
Conclusion: Although this in vivo experimental model showed that purified beeswax implants were biocompatible and caused less tissue reactions than silicone implants, the follow up period was not long enough to demonstrate its long-term effects and further studies on the subject are required. Keywords: Beeswax, siliconesTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2006, 26:245-251
