aPsikiyatri AD, Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Objective: The purpose of this study was to describe effectiveness of the 12 therapeutic factors that are defined by Yalom in short-term group psychotherapy in 3 inpatient groups that were hospitalized consecutively.
Material and Methods: The study was conducted on 36 patients who were treated by dynamic oriented group psychotherapy. These patients were hospitalized consecutively and divided into 3 groups; 1st group included 9 patients, 2nd group consisted 13 patients and 14 patients comprised the 3rd group.
Results: The first three most effective therapeutic factors were family reenactment, existential factors and guidance in the 1st group, interpersonal learning (output), family reenactment and cohesiveness in the 2nd group, family reenactment, interpersonal learning (output) and interpersonal learning (input) in the 3rd group.
There were significant differences in the highly valued factors between the 1st and 3rd group. Overall, the first three valued factors were family reenactment, interpersonal learning (output) and cohesiveness.
Conclusion: The finding that family reenactment was the most valued factor may be attributed to Turkish cultural factors and group outcome is largely affected by therapist style. The differences between the 3 groups may be searched in the future studies. Keywords: Psychotherapy, group, Q sort, inpatientsTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2006, 26:232-239
