aFizyoloji AD, bBiyoistatistik AD, Başkent Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between hand preferences in both genders among university students.
Material and Methods: Three hundred and sixty two university students (271 females, 74.9% and 91 males, 25.1%) volunteered to participate in the study. Hand preference was assessed by the Edinburg Olfield questionnaire. Results were obtained as Geschwind Scores (GS). Handedness was classified in 5 groups
Results: Two hundred and twenty nine (63.3%) students were strong right-handed, 106 (29.3%) were weak right-handed, 6 (1.7%) were both handed, 10 (2.8%) were weak left-handed, and 11 (3%) were strong left-handed. The relationship between genders and hand preference in both groups were not statistically significantly (p= 0.848). Strong right-handedness was more prevalent among both females and males. In both groups the differences were significant (p< 0.01, p< 0.01).
Conclusion: The results of the study suggested that strong right-handedness was the dominant characteristics of hand preference among university students. There was no relationship between genders and hand preference. These findings suggest that the left brain hemisphere might have dominance among these students. The results were compared to those in literature. Keywords: Laterality, gender identity, brainTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2006, 26:225-231
