aİç Hastalıkları AD, Endokrinoloji ve Metabolizma Hastalıkları BD, İstanbul Üniversitesi İstanbul Tıp Fakültesi, İSTANBUL Metabolic syndrome, which is common recently and is increasing steadily due to the high standards of living, has become a community health problem throughout the world. For the first time in 1988, Reaven described this syndrome with the clusters of central obesity, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular diseases and different abnormalities of glucose metabolism. The syndrome was first defined as “Deadly Quartet” and synonyms of “Syndrome X”, “New World Syndrome” or “Insulin Resistance Syndrome” are also used.
Insulin resistance syndrome is a significant condition particularly by increasing the incidence rates of cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The syndrome has been implicated with another common health problem, known as nonalcoholic liver diseases recently. Non-alcoholic liver diseases usually manifest as the simple form of hepatosteatosis or may progress to a more serious form named as non-alcoholic steato hepatitis (NASH). In this article, we discussed the contribution of diabetes and insulin resistance on the development process of non-alcoholic liver diseases and evaluated new trends in the treatment of this common problem. Keywords: Diabetes mellitus, type 2, fatty liverTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2006, 26:176-188
