C-reactive Protein: A New Marker To Determine Cardiovascular Risk

aKardiyoloji AD, bİç Hastalıkları AD, GATA, ANKARA The occurrence of cardiovascular events in patients without conventional cardiovascular risk factors forced the investigators to search for markers providing more accurate cardiovascular risk prediction.
C-reactive protein (CRP) measurement was found to be a strong indicator for cardiovascular risk prediction in studies including large numbers of patients.
High-sensitive CRP (hs-CRP) measurements are standardized and may be easily performed with new methods. In primary prevention studies, elevated CRP levels were related with two- to four-fold rises in cardiovascular risk in healthy subjects.
CRP levels may be useful in determining short- or long-term prognosis in patients with the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease or undergoing percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA). It may be useful in determining the patients with the risk of recurrent cardiovascular events as well. CRP levels are particularly useful in predicting which patients will benefit from medical treatment such as statins and aspirin, and in determining the treatment goals for primary/secondary prevention. Keywords: C-reactive protein, cardiovascular diseasesTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2006, 26:169-175
