Musculoskeletal Pain Among Medical Staff
Dr. Demirhan DIRAÇOĞLUa
aFiziksel Tıp ve Rehabilitasyon AD, İstanbul Üniversitesi İstanbul Tıp Fakültesi, İSTANBUL Objective: An organic pathology is not prevalent among the majority of musculoskeletal pain patients. Generally, the etiology is multifactoral. Working conditions are one of the most important reasons for non-specific pain. The aim of this study was to examine the frequency of musculoskeletal pain in health care workers and their level of knowledge on musculosketal pain.
Material and Methods: Two hundred and six health care workers recruited from three different hospitals who were not diagnosed and who did not receive treatment for musculoskeletal disease were examined. Using a structured questionnaire, subjects were interviewed for location, severity and duration of pain and accompanying symptoms; factors that increase pain; the level of daily sports activities; and the reasons and the appropriate treatments for pain.
Results: Only 12.1% of the participants stated they had no pain. For all four groups, pain was mostly localized in the low back region. The cause of pain was abnormal postural and activity patterns in 32% of the participants; 43% of the participants stated that the best therapy was doing exercise. While 39.7% of the participants stated that they did not participate in any sports activity, 48.9% performed walking activity regularly for exercise.
Conclusions: Health care workers are among high-risk groups for musculoskeletal diseases. The training of health care workers on this subject seems inadequate, and many mistakes are done while working. To keep their health in good condition and to provide better care service for patients, training of health care workers on this issue is essential. Environmental working conditions in health care should be reviewed. Keywords: Health care workers, musculoskeletal painTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2006, 26:132-139
