*Yrd.Doç.Dr., Gaziosmanpaşa Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Radiodiagnostik AD, TOKAT Purpose: In this study, we report the magnetic resonance findings of a case with malignant pleural mesothelioma which has extension through the diaphragm to the peri-toneal cavity.
Materials and Metods: Magnetic resonance imaging was performed 1 Tesla Magnetom Impact, Siemens Medical Systems, Erlangen, Germany. T1 Weighted images and T2 Weighted images in the axiel and coronal plane, STIR images in the coronal plane were obtained. T1 Weighted images were repeated following the injection of contrast ajan.
Results: On magnetic resonance imaging, pleural nodules in the costal, mediastinal and diaphragmatic pleura of the right hemithorax were observed, which revealed mild hyperintensity on T2 Weighted images and evident hy-perintensity on STIR images. There were direct exten-sion through the diaphragmatic hiatus to the peritoneal cavity, retroperitoneal extension and perihepatic implants in the peritoneal cavity. On postcontrast images, hetero-gen enhancement was seen in pleural nodules. Biopsy of the pleural nodules were performed and histopathologic examinations demonsrated malignant pleural mesotheli-oma.
Conclusion: The current standart for the noninvasive staging of patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma is com-puted tomography often cannot determine whether a tu-mor is unresectable because of direct extension through the diaphragm to the peritoneal cavity. In this study, it was emphaized that contribution of magnetic resonance imaging to diagnosis. Keywords: Mesothelioma, Magnetic Resonance ImagingTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2003, 23:486-490
