*** Doç.Dr., Celal Bayar Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Nöroşirürji AD, MANISA Introduction: The spontaneous resolution of a herniated cervical disc in a woman is reported to describe a rare occurrence of spontaneous regression of a cervical her-niated nucleus pulposus and to discuss its mechanism. Although the spontaneous resolution of herniated nu-cleus pulposus is a well known phenomenon in lumbar disc herniations, it is rarely encountered in the cervical region. Several hypotheses about the mechanism of herniated nucleus pulposus regression have been pos-tulated. Among them, retraction by posterior longitudi-nal ligament tension, dehydration, disc degeneration, immunologic reaction and resorption by macrophage phagocytosis have been described.
Case Report: A woman with a large herniated cervical disc refused to undergo operation and was followed-up for 20 months. The result is discussed. Follow-up magnetic resonance imaging of the cervical spine revealed a complete regression of the herniated disc material. Her symtoms were also alleviated.
Conclusion: In large cervical disc herniations without severe myelopathy symptoms, potential for spontaneous re-gression should be considered. Keywords: Intervertebral Disk Displacement, Cervical VertebraeTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2003, 23:480-482
