Materials and Methods: In this study, we included 216 pa-tients (92 female/124 male) with ESRD who admitted to the Yüzüncü Yıl University Medical School Training Hospital Department of Internal Medicine and Nephrol-ogy from August 2001 to June 2002 and 87 healthy con-trols (37 female/50 male).
Results: Mean age was 48.4±16.9 in patients with CRF and 46.9±17.2 in healthy controls. Eighty-one patients re-ceived hemodialysis therapy, 17 chronic ambulatory peri-toneal dialysis (CAPD) and, 118 were followed in predi-alysis period. Hyperthyroidism was present in 3.2%, hy-pothyroidism was 10.2%patients with CRF. These rates were 1.2%, 3.5%in healthy controls respectively. Differ-ences between two groups were statistically significant (p<0.001). Prevalence of anti-tiroglobulin (anti-TG) anti-body was 12.4%, anti-tiorid peroxidase (anti-TPO) was 14.3%in patients with CRF. Prevalence of anti-TG and anti-TPO was 1.2 in healthy controls. Differences between two groups was statistically significant (p<0.001). No sig-nificant differences were found serum levels of tiroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (FT4) and total thyroxine (TT4) but we found significant statistically dif-ferences serum total triiodothyronine (TT3) and free triio-dothyronine (FT3) in two groups (p<0.031 and p<0.043).
Conclusion: Marked alterations are seen in thyroid hormon profile in patients with CRF. Hypothyroidism, hyperthy-roidism are frequent in patients with CRF than normal healthy controls. Keywords: Kidney Failure, Chronic, Thyroid Function Test, Hypothyroidism, Hyperthyroidism, Iodide Peroxidase, ThyroglobulinTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2003, 23:437-441
