While it occurs as a postinfectious event in children and adolescents, it is mostly associated with diabetes mellitus during adulthood. The disease is mainly limited to the skin; however, rarely it involves the muscles of the tongue, pharynx and eosephagus with infiltration of mucin, leading to dysphagia. In the case of coexistence of dysphagia and skin induration, sclerosing skin diseases with dysphagia, including systemic sclerosis and scleromyxedema should be considered in the differential diagnosis.
Here, we present a case of scleredema with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus who was investigated thoroughly for elucidating the cause of severe dysphagia. As there was no detectable cause of dysphagia, this symptom was considered to be related with scleredema. In conclusion, we delineate that scleredema should also be considered in the differential diagnosis of diseases associated with dysphagia. Keywords: Deglutition disorders, scleroderma, systemicTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2006, 26:93-97
