Objective: To investigate whether any temporary change occurs in the efficacy of nasal dilator strips known to lower the nasal resistance by increasing the area and volume of nasal valve.
Material and Methods: Twenty cases without nasal obstruction complaint ware enrolled in the study. Nasal airways of the cases were evaluated by acoustic rhinometry, before and after application of the nasal dilator strips. The first measurement was performed at 08.00 AM immediately after the application and consecutive tests were repeated in the same day with an interval of 2 hours until 16.00 PM. Cross-sectional areas (CSA) CSA1 and CSA2 that are shown in the standard rhinogram were noted. Volume of the first 4 cm of the nasal airway behind the nostril dividing into 2 equal parts were calculated and named as V1 and V2. The results of consecutive tests were compared with “variant analysis in repeated measurements”.
Results: The measurements of CSA1 and V1 after the application of nasal dilator strips significantly increased compared to basal levels. [Respectively (right F= 11.293; p= 0.003, left F= 72.655; p< 0.001), (right F= 16.124, p= 0.001, sol F= 29.697; p< 0.001)]. In CSA2 and V2 parameters, no significant changes were shown after the application of nasal dilator strips (p> 0.05). The nasal dilator strips led to a mean increase of 0.14 ± 0.19 cm2 in the CSA1 on the right side and 0.23 ± 0.13 cm2 on the left side. By application of these strips, V1 values also increased 0.11 ± 0.12 cm3 on the right side and 0.14 ± 0.13 cm3 on the left side. No significant differences were present between the consecutive tests in any of the parameters of the nasal airways throughout the day after the application of dilators (p> 0.05).
Conclusion: Nasal dilator strips enlarged the nasal valve cross sectional area and also enhanced the volume at the anterior nasal passage significantly and maintained this effect for at least 8 hours.
