Current Approach To Nutritional Support In Gastrointestinal System Fistules: Review

Most of the gastointestinal fistules are due to spontanous intestinal inflammatory diseases, cancer, peptic ulcer and pancreatitis as well as postoperative acute and iatrogenic causes or the use of operative instruments. Nutritional loss from fistules may lead to malnutrition and increases mortality. The death rate, which was about 30-40%, has decreased to 10% recently with the availability of nutritional support. The aim of parenteral or enteral nutritional supplementation in patients with gastointestinal fistules is to prevent malnutrition and gain a source for wellness.
