Objective: The motivation behind the child-mother relationship among preschoolers was investigated.
Material and Methods: The impact of child-mother relationship on 46 (26 [56%] boys, and 20 [44%] girls) preschoolers was investigated by evaluating the common elements in their feelings expressed in an assay written by them. The mean age of the sample group was 7.4 ± 0.4 years and the socioeconomic level was high to middle.
Results: Children declared that they were protected (61%), provided with food and hygiene (56%), affectionately caressed (37%), counseled (25%) and entertained (14%) by their mothers. They also were aware of the fact that they needed their mothers’ care for survival (84%). Although they knew that they owed more, they only could give their love (90%) and trust (34%) in return. Therefore, they needed to resort to; 1. Commitment-‘I will always love you’(94%); 2. Glorification-‘You are the best’ (86%); and 3. Intimidation-‘I will die without you’ (79%) in order to maintain maternal care. Moreover, they resorted to atonement behavior-‘I will love you even though if I ever disappointed you’-for any cause resulting in resentment between themselves and their mothers, assuring her that their fault, if any, was out of their own will (61%).
Conclusion: The emotion-appealing care-seeking behavior of middle-aged children seemed to be contingent on the continuum of maternal care for the child’s survival. The results were discussed both with attachment theory and with behaviorism.
