The Health Status And Expectations Of Women Participating In Belmek Courses In The KeÇİÖren Municipality In Ankara

aHalk Sağlığı AD, bHacettepe Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Objective: This cross sectional epidemiological study was conducted in December 2003 to determine some of the health problems of women attending BELMEK courses in the Keçiören district of Ankara, Turkey.
Material and Methods: During the course of the study, expectations concerning the health services provided by the municipality were asked. Questionnaires were administered to 265 randomly selected women.
Results: The percentage of women experiencing stillbirth was higher in the study group when compared to the Turkish national mean. Other obstetric demographics of the participants were similar to national rates. The majority of the participants utilized modern family planning methods.
Most of the women who participated in the study said that they had no information relating to the health services provided by the Keçiören municipality and the majority of the women were not frequenting the municipality’s health centers. The health service most demanded by this group was free “check-ups”.
Conclusion: A majority of the women also demanded health education sessions to be included in the BELMEK courses. General health, first aid and women’s health were the most requested health topics. Most of the women who participated in the study demanded the availability of a physician or nurse and monthly health controls at the courses.Keywords: Women’s rights, women’s healthTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2005, 25:669-677
