a3. Genel Cerrahi Kliniği, Şişli Etfal Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, İSTANBUL Objective: In this study, patients who presented in our emergency room with blunt abdominal injury resulting in isolated splenic trauma and the patterns of treatment used were investigated.
Material and Methods: Between January 2001 and September 2004, 56 patients with blunt abdominal injury, resulting in isolated splenic trauma were seen. Treatment indications in the non-operative group of patients, imaging techniques, hospitalization periods, mortality and morbidity rates were examined.
Results: 41 of 56 patients hospitalized because of blunt abdominal trauma were male and 15 were female. The mean age of patients was 42.3 (13-95) years. The number of patients with isolated splenic trauma was 12 (21.4%) and 10 of these (83.3%) were treated conservatively. It was observed that 4 of the patients had grade 3 (40%), 4 grade 2 (40%) and 2 of them had grade 1 (20%) injury. Patients conservatively treated fully recovered. The mean period of hospitalization was 8.7 days (7-10). The period of hospitalization for 2 of the operatively managed patients was 9.5 days (9-10).
Conclusion: Conservative treatment for haemodynamically stable patients with isolated splenic rupture as a consequence of blunt abdominal trauma is a safe and reasonable method of treatment. Keywords: Wounds and injuries, therapeutics, splenectomyTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2005, 25:649-652
