It extends from foramen magnum to sacral hiatus. It’s not connected with intracranial spaces and local anesthetics can not exceed C1 level. An epidural catheter can be placed through any interspace at the determined level in sitting or lateral decubitis position for epidural anesthesia and analgesia. The use of epidural anesthetics and analgesics has a great number of indications such as postoperative acute pain, labor analgesia, chronic pain, thorax trauma, vascular surgery and sympathetic blockade. Combinations of local anesthetics, opioids and nonopioids are effective for attenuation of pain by epidural analgesia. Nausea, vomiting, hypotension, somnolence, respiratory depression, pruritis, urinary retention and tolerance can be seen due to opioids, while local anesthetics frequently cause hypotension, motor block and tachyphlaxis. The present study is a review of important rules and complications of epidural analgesia that is frequently used for management of pain. Keywords: Analgesia, Epidural, Anesthetics, Local, NarcoticsTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2003, 23:430-436
