Material and Method: Records of the patients, who were operated between January 1990 and April 2003, were investigated retrospectively. The duration of the complaints were as short as one year, and as long as 20 years, the median value of the complaints was 6 years. Chest x-rays and thorax CT scaning were applied to all of the patients.
Results: The most common reason for bronchiectasis was recurrent infection (78%). One-sided localized disease were found in 28 patients, one-sided diffuse disease were found in 4 and double-sided localized disease were encountered in 4 of the patients. Thirty four lobectomies, four pneumonectomies and two non-anatomic resections performed among 40 procedures. During postoperative period three (8 %) patients were died, including one late death (postop 30 days).
Conclusions: We observed that, patients who had one-sided localized or one-sided generalized disease were responded well or almost well to therapy. Either operations or postoperative periods of the patients, who had long-standing disease, were problematic. Keywords: Bronchiectasis, Operative Surgical Procedure, PneumonectomyTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2003, 23:359-365
