aAnesteziyoloji ve Reanimasyon Kliniği, SSK Okmeydanı Eğitim Hastanesi, İSTANBUL Objective: Our aim was to evaluate the efficacy of postoperative analgesic treatment and to overcome difficulties encountered by patients due to insufficiencies of care due to personnel shortages through the implementation of a total quality pain management program (TQMP).
Material and Methods: Patients necessitating postoperative analgesia by patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) were placed on individualized treatment plans and prospectively evaluated by a specially prepared questionnaire.
Results: 54 patients were followed by our pain service. The female /male ratio was 25/29. The mean age was 56.4 ± 7.6 years. PCA device utilization was judged sufficient and very efficient by 39 patients (72%) and insufficient by 15 (28%). Constipation, urinary retention and nausea were the most common side effects.
Conclusion: Considerable success may be attained by utilizing “TQPM” to increase the quality of postoperative care. Keywords: Analgesia, management quality circlesTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2005, 25:530-537
