Material and Methods: The mean age of one hundred twenty patients (61 female and 59 male) is 37.61 ± 17.24 (13-75) years old. 60.8% percent (n= 73) of these were administered CBZ and 39.2% (n= 47) OCZ. The mean dosage of CBZ was 517.81 ± 180.54 mg/d (range: 200-1200 mg/d), while the oxcarbazepine dosage was 839.36 ± 340.71 mg/d (range: 450-1800 mg/d).
Results: Statistically, there was no difference between the two groups (p= 0.311) during the control period in terms of seizure activity.
Conclusion: Seizures were well controlled in 80 patients (66.7%); however, in 40 (33.3%) some seizure activity was seen to intermittently occur. We found no differences in seizure frequency in 3 (2.5%) patients. These findings suggest CBZ monotherapy to be more effective than OCZ. Furthermore, CBZ achieved this effectiveness with smaller dosages than OCZ (p< 0.014).Keywords: Carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, partial, epilepsy and prognosisTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2005, 25:513-518
