Objective: The association between age and gender of patients and histological prognostic parameters such as tumor localization, dimension, differentiation, cartilage invasion, lymph node metastasis, extracapsular extension in metastatic lymph nodes in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma, as well as p53 and nm23 expression was evaluated.
Material and Methods: One hundred and one squamous cell carcinoma cases, in whom total laryngectomy and radical cervical lymph node dissection had been performed, constituted our patient pool. p53 (Ab-5, DO-7) and nm23 (Ab-1) were immunohistochemically examined on tumor slides. The results were evaluated semiquantatively. Association between these results and tumor localization, dimension, differentiation, cartilage invasion, lymph node metastasis, and extracapsular extension in metastatic lymph nodes was determined.
Results: There was no staining in 46.5% of the cases for p53. In 13%, (+) staining, in 27.7% (++), and in 12.8% (+++) staining was noted. In 23.8% of the cases, positive staining could not be observed for nm23. There was (+) staining in 17.5%, (++) in 27.3% and (+++) in 31.4% of the cases for mm23.
Conclusion: There was no association between the reviewed histological prognostic parameters and immunohistochemically-verifiable p53 mutation or nm23 expression. Therefore, we suggest that p53 mutation and nm23 expression are not directly associated with heretofore commonly accepted prognostic parameters in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma.
