The amount of telom-eric DNA has been shown to decrease during each cell replica-tion and loss of telomeric DNA has been proposed to be a cause of cell senescence. Telomerase is a specialized ribonu-cleoprotein that it uses its RNA component as a template for the synthesis of the telomeric hexanucleotide repeats (TTAGGG)n and balance telomeric loss. PCR-based TRAP assay was used to examine telomerase activity in different types of tumors and telomerase activity was detected in 85% of these tumors. The results suggest that telomerase activation is associated with immortalization or malign transformation and detection of telomerase activity could be an important marker for the diagnosis of human tumors. It is hoped that there will be new inventions in gerantology and cancer thera-phy by the discovery of the genes that regulate telomerase activity. Keywords: Telomerase, NeoplasmTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2003, 23:334-341
