The Role Of Dynamic Stents In Postintubation Tracheal Stenosis

Purpose: Recently implantation stent which has become a popular method in a short time has taken part among therapeutic methods in benign and malign tracheobron-chial stenosis. Stenosis is caused by primary and secon-dary reasons. Postintubation stenosis is the most com-mon reason among surgical treatment indications. Never-theless, using of low pressure cuff tubes and double cuff tracheostomy cannules have decreased the incidence of postintubation stenosis, currently it still continues to con-stitue a serious problem. Patients with tracheal stenosis is presented with life-threatining dyspnea, cough affecting life quality. Surgical resection of tracheal stenosis is dif-ficult and it may not be possible in certain condition. Stent implantation is the most effective method espe-cially when surgical therapy can not be performed. The Freitag Dynamic stent which has been devised recently is preferred due to its advantages.
Case Report: Complicated postintubation stenosis is caused by tracheostomy and intubation were observed in all of our cases. Effective treatment was obtained with implan-tation of Dynamic stent in the cases admitted to our de-partment after administration of various treatment meth-ods at different centers previously.
Conclusion: Dynamic stent is the most reliable, and the most tolerable stent among the others in tracheal stenosis.Keywords: Tracheal Stenosis, Intubation, Intratracheal, StentsTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2003, 23:310-318
