Design: Controlled comparative data trial.
Setting and participants: 28 children with protein energy malnutri-tion and healthy 25 control cases with good nutrition status at the Department of Pediatrics, Cumhuriyet University.
Results: There were no significant differences between malnutritioned patients and control cases in bone age and cortex thickness of the second metacarpal bone with plain radiographic evaluation (p>0.05). Significant reduction in radius-ulna bone mineral den-sity measurements was detected with dual-energy x-ray absorp-tiometry in protein energy malnutritioned children compared to control cases (p<0.01).
Conclusion: Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry can provide accurate and early bone health assesment in children with malnutrition.
Comment: Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the most commonly used method for the assessment of bone health in children and adults. Unfortunately, the interpretation of DXA results is fraught with difficulty in children, especially in those with delayed growth or maturation. At present, however, pediat-ric reference data for these bone health assessment tools are in-adequate, limiting their ability to identify children at risk for os-teoporosis. In children with chronic disease with delayed growth and maturation, the creation of reference data is of paramount importance. We compared conventional x-ray and DXA find-ings of bone mineralization in children with protein energy mal-nutrition.Keywords: Densitometry, X-Ray, Child, Calcification, Physiologic, Growth Retardation, MalnutritionTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2003, 23:305-309
