Materials and Methods: Our study was accomplished on 30 patients scheduled for elective surgery. Patients were monitored for heart rate, mean arterial pressure and peripheric oxygen saturation in the operation room. After standardized anesthesia induction eosofageal temperature probe was inserted. End-tidal C02 pressure was kept between 32-35 mmHg-1 and temperature of operation room was kept between 21-22oC. Postanesthetic shivering seen at the end of the operation after extubation was evaluated by 4 degree scale. Patients were randomly allocated into two groups; Group I (n=15) was given iv 8 mg ondansetron and Group II (n=15) was given iv 1 mg.kg-1 tramadol. Heart rate, mean arterial pressure, peripheric oxygen saturation, eosofageal temperature were measured before and after drug administration and duration of shivering was noted when shivering ended. If postanesthetic shivering did not end within 5 minutes, 25 mg iv meperidine was applied. Result: Statistically there was no difference, at measured mean heart rate, mean arterial pressure, peripheric oxygen saturation, temperature values and shivering scores at sequence of shivering and after shivering. In Group 1 shivering ended in 3.97±1.76 min, in Group 2 in 1.82±1.37 min, and this difference was found statistically significant (p<0.01). 6 patients in Group I, 1 patient in Group II shivering did not end in 5 minutes and these difference was found statistically significant (p<0.05). First degree postoperative nausea-vomiting was observed in 1 case of ondansetron group and in 6 cases of tramadol group. Conclusion: As a result, we evaluated that tramadol effective in prevention of postanesthetic shivering when compared to ondansetron, however we think that the side effects of tramadol should not be ignored. Keywords: Shivering, Anesthetics, Ondansetron, TramadolTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2003, 23:223-226
