The Factors Affecting Alcohol Consumption Prevalance In Three Sports Academies In Adana, Mersin And Hatay

***Yrd.Doç.Dr., Mersin Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Biyoistatistik AD, MERSİN Purpose: This cross-sectional study was carried out among Sports Academia students in Adana Hatay and Mersin with the aim of finding the prevalence of alcohol drinking and affecting factors. Material and Method: A questionnaire with questions about the alcohol consumption of students and their parents and with questions about socio-demographic status was completed by 155 students in Mersin University, 141 students in Cukurova University, 202 students in Mustafa Kemal University, a total of 498 students were in the study. Data was analyzed with chi-square, t-test and Binary Logistic Regression.Results: 45.4% of all students were alcohol drinkers. Alcohol drinking prevalence were 54.1% in male students and 34.1% in females. The more alcohol drinking prevalence, the higher grade in school. Factors that increase alcohol-drinking prevalence were, respectively, smoking of student (OR=6.35), being male (OR=4.17), alcohol consumption of the mother (OR=3.81), alcohol consumption of the father (OR=2.84), alcohol consumption of siblings (OR=2.09) and another factor was high monthly income of the student (OR=1.01). The students reported to prefer being alone or with friends when drinking alcohol. The most consumpted alcohol was beer. Conclusion: A national prospective study that will be a sample for Turkey should be carried out to monitor attitudes and behaviors of students about smoking, alcohol consumption and other addictive substance abuse.Keywords: Alcohol Drinking, Students, Universities, PrevalenceTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2003, 23:208-212
