Material and Method: MDA and erythrocyte SOD levels, PFT (FEVı %, FEVı/FVC %, FEF25-75 %) and amount of cigarette consumption in the 20 healthy smokers were compared with in the 20 healthy non-smokers. Results: In smokers FEVı/FVC% and FEF25-75% were significantly lower than controls (p<0.03, p<0.01). Additionally in smokers group the MDA (13.673 ± 5.247 nmol/ml ) was found significantly higher , than that of the controls (10.042 ± 3.717 nmol/ml) (p< 0.001) and also, level of the MDA was found moderate relation amount of the cigarette consumption (r –0.40) and decrease of the FEVı/FVC %, FEF25-75 %. Controversially, SOD concentration were not statistically different from controls and were not found any relation between level of the SOD and amount of the cigarette con-sumption and PFTConclution; Our results have shown that cigarette smoking increases serum MDA levels, this increasing correlation with the consumption amount of the cigarette and decrease of the pulmonary function test parameters. Any relationship was not found between these parameters and the level of SOD. This results may be explained with SOD was not conducted as early mechanism to compose the oxidant/ antioxidant imbalance. Keywords: Antioxidants, Superoxide dismutase, Malondialdehyde, SmokingTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:292-296
