The Effect Of Melatonin On Kidney Of Rats With Hyperthyroidism

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate light microscopically structural changes occurred in kidney of rats with hyperthyroidism and effect of Melatonin on this changes.Materials and Method: In this study rats were divided into 3 equal groups; Group I was control, group II was injected with 3,3’,5-Triiodo-L-Thyronine (T3), group III was injected with T3+Melatonin. In the end of study, kidneys were removed and examined with light microscopicy.Results: In the light microscopic examination, PAS (+) increasing in basal membran of tubules and in Bowman capsule, cell debris together with granular material accumulation in proximal tubule lumen, filling in blood vessels, hyaline material accumulation in some tubules in cortex and medulla were observed in group II. In group III, filling in blood vessels and hyaline accumulation in tubules decreased. Cell debris were also present in proximal tubules.Conclusion: In our study, it was observed that hyperthyroidism caused structural changes in kidney and melatonin didn’t make important effect on this changes.Keywords: Hyperthyroidism, Kidney, MelatoninTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:287-291
