Two minutes after injection of alfentanil 10 mg/kg iv, patients received mivacurium 0.04 mg/kg in mivacurium group (n=22) and normal saline in placebo group (n=22) followed by administration of propofol 2.5 mg/kg to each group. Condition during LMA insertion, duration of apnea, duration for LMA to remain in place, blood on LMA after removal were recorded. The patients were reviewed one day after intracavitary radiotherapy for laryngopharyngeal complaints. The ratio of successful insertion of LMA during the first attempt was found to be 54.5% in placebo group and 95.5% in mivacurium group (p<0.05). In mivacurium group, while providing better jaw relaxation, incidences of swallowing, bucking and laryngospasm were also been decreased (p<0.05). There was no difference between the groups in duration of apnoea and the detection of blood on LMA was more frequent in placebo group (p<0.05). In mivacurium group, postoperative sore throat was 32%, difficulty in swallowing was 18%. However, in placebo group, these results were 60% and 50% respectively (p<0.05).As a result, using low dose mivacurium during alfentanil-propofol induction provided better conditions for LMA insertion and incidences of postoperative sore throat and difficulty in swallowing were significantly reduced. Keywords: Laryngeal Masks, Muscle Relaxants, MivacuriumTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:281-286
