Premature Ovarian Failure

Premature ovarian failure (POF), is a rare clinical diagnosis with 4-6 months amenorrhea periods before the age of 40 and at least two elevated FSH levels 40 IU/L detected in one month interval. The etiology hasn’t been elucidated yet and genetic, autoimmune, environmental factors might play a role in the pathogenesis. Recent publications in genetics suggests that a possible role of X chromosome critical region (Xq13-26) deletions and translocations in etiology of POF. Ultimately new clinical follow-up protocols and treatments are defined. In accordance, risk of severe osteoporosis must be accounted in those patients.In this paper, the recent literature in POF etiology, treatment, diagnose and links with fragile X syndrome has been reviewed.Keywords: Premature ovarian failure, X chromosome, ImmunityTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:328-332
