*** Prof.Dr., Akdeniz Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Histoloji ve Embriyoloji AD, ANTALYA The harmony between the cells in an organism is one of the main principles in their survival. This harmonic position is determined by various intracellular and extracellular factors. The adhesion molecules are categorized into 6 groups as; receptor protein tyrosine phosphatases, Ig superfamily, cadherins, integrins, hyalurinade receptors and selectins. They are also effective in carrying out the cell functions in addition to their roles in cellular proliferation, migration, differentiation and maturation at prenatal and postnatal developmental stages. Because the types and the appearance times of these molecules show variation, they exhibit functional differences. Particularly the occurrence of cellular formation and differentation steps in the central nervous systems has a precise role in the establishment of functional interaction and it also has very important roles in the regulation of intracellular or intercellular signal transduction, the organization of cellular actions and the maintanence of immune and inflammatory responses. In this review; the structure of adhesion molecules and the functions they gain depending on these features are criticised. According to these evidence, the responsibilities of adhesion molecules in the abnormalities at the system level is examined. Keywords: Cell Adhesion Molecules, Multiple sclerosisTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:313-327
