It was investigated at light and transmission electron microscopic levels whether the hypoacidity observed in rats fed for 30 days orally with normal food and 15 ppm cadmium (CdCl2) added drinking water is related with gastric parietal cell morphology. In our findings, blood and tissue cadmium levels of animals exposed to cadmium were increased, the values of their basal acid and mucin content were decreased. Parietal cell population was also decreased and their tubulovesicle membranes were torn.As a result, we think that the hypoacidity observed in rats exposed to cadmium, may depend on diminishing parietal cell population or back diffusion of luminal acid from the broken gastric mucosal barrier. Keywords: Rats, Stomach, Parietal Cells, CadmiumTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:249-254
