* Uz. Dr., Uludağ Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Aile Hekimliği AD, BURSA The importance of clinical skills training in medicine is increasing day by day in all over the world. Also, learning and teaching communication in medical field is one of the interesting subjects nowadays. Deficiencies in communication can affect negatively the satisfaction of the patient, patient’s adaptation to the treatment, the health costs and health outcomes. The studies which aimed to give communication skills training have been started in many medical faculties. The aim of our study is to learn the deficiencies and opinions of the sixth year students about communication and clinical skills, which has not been given such a training in Uludağ University School of Medicine. Our study material was the evaluation of responses to our questionnaire of 146 sixth year students. 84.2% of the students were thinking that there is a need for communication skills training, 91.8% found themselves insufficient regarding some of the skills. The most insufficient skill was named as prescribing. Male students were more insufficient than the females on communicating with cancer patients (p<0.05). There is not only a need for a formal training on different skills, especially on doctor-patient relationship, for the physicians working as a primary care providers; but also training of the trainers, increasing communications with difficult patients and giving more importance to the insufficient skills. Keywords: Communication skills, Medical education, Medical studentsTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:185-189
