***Prof.Dr., Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Nöroşirürji AD, ANKARA Purpose: The high serum lipid levels are known as a cause of the vascular stenosis including carotid arteries. The aim of this study is to determine a relationship between the hyperlipidemia which is an early risk factor of atherosclerosis and carotid artery stenosis. Materials and Methods: Eighty-six (17 female, 69 male) patients who underwent an operation because of carotid artery stenosis were divided to three groups according to degree of carotid artery stenosis (90-100%, 80-90%, 60-80%). Serum total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, VLDL cholesterol and triglycerides were determined in every group and results were compared between each groups.Results-Conclusion: In our study, we found a direct correlation between high levels of LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol and the grading of carotid stenosis. These results indicate that LDL cholesterol is an important risk factor for carotid artery atherosclerosis. Keywords: Carotid Stenosis, Cholesterol, Lipoproteins, HDL Cholesterol, LDL Cholesterol, VLDL Cholesterol, TriglyceridesTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2003, 23:112-114
