A Rare Parotid Mass: Tuberculosis Of The Parotid Gland

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present a primary tuberculosis of the parotid gland. Case Report: On examination of a 58-year-old woman, a 10x8 cm sized mass located in the right parotidal area was found. The patient was treated with superficial parotidectomy.Results: In the postoperative period, the patient did not show any complication. Histopathological diagnosis was reported to be tuberculosis of the parotid gland.Conclusion: Primary tuberculosis of the parotid gland is rare. It is a challenge to clinically distinguish these slow growing masses from other malign masses of the parotid gland. The problem is further compounded by the lack of local or systemic signs and symptoms of tuberculosis. Imaging studies such as sialography, ultrasonography or computerized tomography may be non-specific and diagnosis is usually made after surgical intervention.Keywords: Parotid Gland, TuberculosisTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2003, 23:156-158
