The Colorful World Of Dermatology: Gentian Violet

** Dr., İnönü Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Dermatoloji AD, MALATYA Commercial preparations of triphenylmethane dye gentian violet (crystal violet or hexamethylpararosaniline) are partially purified mixtures of at least three rosaniline dyes: hexa-, penta-, and tetramethylpararosaniline. Gentian violet was introduced into medical use as an antiseptic by J. Stelling in 1890, and used at a concentration of 1-2% in aqueous solution. It is still in use mainly as an antibacterial, and secondly an antifungal, antiinflammatory, and astrangent agent. In this article; its effects, side effects, and dermatological indications were reviewed in the light of currrent literature.Keywords: Gentian violetTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:245-248
